A sedation dentist… hearing the words sedation dentist make me think of an anesthesiologist. My husband thinks that the job of an anesthesiologist would be the ideal job, getting to sit with patients while they have surgery and monitor their pain level and sedation level. Well, this is what a sedation dentist does. A sedation dentist takes care of patients pain and sedation levels during dental procedures, especially dental surgeries. A sedation dentist is usually present during the dental procedure.
Why have a sedation dentist when the oral surgeon dentist can do the job? That’s a good question and the answer seems to be that an oral surgeon needs to be able to devote all his/her dental skills attention on the dental patients dental or cosmetic surgical procedure. An oral surgeon or cosmetic dentist will need the help of a sedation dentist because then the sedation dentist can devote all his/her dental skills attention on the sedation and pain level of the dental patients. Using the right doses and sedation medications for patients is also very important. This type of dental knowledge must be known by a cosmetic dentist, but the cosmetic dentist, again, must focus his/her total dental skills attention on the dental surgery at hand, not on the pharmaceutical side of the sedation. This is the purpose of having both a sedation dentist and an oral surgeon dentist or cosmetic dentist present during a dental procedure. A sedation dentist must put the patients to sleep and then the sedation dentist must monitor the sedation and pain levels of the patients.
Cosmetic dentistry is one dentistry that will use a sedation dentist continuously. In fact, a cosmetic dentistry would do well to hire a full-time sedation dentist since most cosmetic dentistry procedures require some type of sedation or pain control. A sedation dentist can also control pain levels for patients during minor dental surgeries where dental patients aren’t put to sleep but rather have a minor sedation given for pain relief by the sedation dentist.
A sedation dentist would also work in a dentist office where oral surgery would be performed regularly, daily in fact. Such a dentistry would be a dentist office that performs wisdom teeth extraction. Wisdom teeth extraction is a dental procedure that requires patients to be put to sleep by a sedation dentist and effectively monitored by a sedation dentist so that the oral surgeon dentist can focus on the wisdom teeth extraction. Because an oral surgeon completing dental wisdom teeth extraction needs a sedation dentist for every dental procedure, it would be safe to say that all oral surgeon dentist(s) would hire a full-time sedation dentist as part of the dentistry staff. During wisdom teeth extraction a sedation dentist must ensure that the patients are put to sleep and stay in sedation sleep so that the patients mouth can be held open for the dentist. An oral surgeon definitely needs a sedation dentist on the dentistry team.
A sedation dentist, therefore, works in a cosmetic dentistry and/or an oral surgeon dentistry.
